Melbourne Cup!

Last night after I got off the internet, Soxi, Ashley and I went into the city to look around. It was such a change from Adelaide: places were open and there were people everywhere at 11 at night! Amazing! The architecture here is really fun and because Australia doesn't have Halloween and Thanksgiving as buffers, Christmas decorations are already lining the streets. We went to a small cafe by the river and had cake, tea, and iced chocolate until 1 or so in the morning. Every hour, the casino put on a fire show over the river. It was awesome and we all really enjoyed ourselves.

The three of us had a lot of fun today at the Cup. We woke up early to get dressed up all fancy, and we headed out with the throngs of other well-dressed, crazy-hatted people to Flemington Racetrack to see Australia's most famous horse race.

Me and Soxi on the train, ready for the races!

Most of the time between races was spent taking pictures of us posing, and it made me very happy, apparently.

The dresses and hats were insane, and Carson from Queer Eye was there judging people's outfits. Ashley got a close up shot of him with the zoom lens; she was able to get in close because people thought she was press. The zoom lens was magic this way. We were also able to get really close to the track by wielding it in a creative manner.

Some of the races! Go horses, go!

Musketeers having a swordfight while waiting for the next race to begin.

We loved taking secret pictures of outfits and hats. Zoom lens for the win!

I bet on some horses; overall I spent $17 and made back $16, so it wasn't too bad. This was our first bet we placed; both Soxi and my horses won! Go Sharkbite!

This is the winning horse of the big Cup race, Efficient. He had something like 40:1 odds, so whoever bet on him made a good deal of money. I put money on the favourite, and he didn't even place. Stupid horse.

This is my whole outfit! Unlike everything else I've worn this year, all of this belongs to me. Well, except for the thing in my hair, that's Soxi's.

When we got back to Melbourne we had a big, fancy dinner on the riverfront since we were all dressed up. It was wonderful, even though I got really burnt at the Cup. You can see it starting here. Ouch!

OH MY GAWD. CARSON WAS THERE??? I am so, so, SO jealous. It's probably a good thing I'm not there with you because I would have gotten us kicked out of the race for trying to molest him.

Keep doing awesome things so I can keep living vicariously through you!

Laura!

First rule of racing: _never_ bet on the favorite!

I missed the last blog, so it was wonderful looking at the pictures of your hike through the temperate rainforest and the ocean. It must have been wonderful staying right by the beach. (Too bad you didn't get a shot of the wallaby and joey.)

Races looked like a lot of fun (and the weather looked good too.) You're just having too much fun.

Guess you're back in Adelaide now. We'll talk over the weekend.

Love, Dad
